Wordbench(TM) , Version 1.2
The tool for people who write.™
Developed by Bank Street College of Education, and Franklin E. Smith
"[Wordbench] abounds with uncommonly slick features...It is a great pleasure to come across occasional programs such as Wordbench, in which a great deal of creative thought has been brought to reality..."
—Jack Warner, The Personal Computer
Atlanta Journal Constitution, July 1988
Wordbench, The tool for people who write™ is the first software program designed to address writing needs, not just word processing problems. In its simplest form Wordbench is a powerful word processor, but in fact, it's a complete writing environment designed to work the way people write. At the press of a key, Wordbench gives access to specialized tools for any stage of document preparation—tools for outlining; for taking and sorting notes or references; for writing, editing, formatting and analyzing what's been written; for correcting spelling or finding the right synonym.
Wordbench capably handles all the routines of word processing, but its emphasis is on managing the writing process itself. Developed by Bank Street College of Education and Franklin E. Smith, Wordbench is structured into six primary components: the OUTLINER, the NOTETAKER, the WRITER, the PRINT MANAGER, the FOLDER MANAGER, and the ADD-IN-MANAGER. Each of these features creates a writing and information management environment that is suitable for a variety of potential uses including home or business projects, professional writing, college and graduate studies, and high school writing assignments.
You don't have to be a technical wizard to reap the benefits from the program either! Wordbench automates the age-old techniques of writing by a set of dynamic links between the OUTLINER and the NOTETAKER. For instance, if you have an idea while you are writing the outline, you can make a note of it and link it to the appropriate section. Once all the notes and the outline are complete, Wordbench merges them into a first draft instantly! If the outline headings or subheadings are reordered, Wordbench moves the notes accordingly.
In addition to its role in the outlining process, the NOTETAKER works as an information manager. Based on the idea of a 3" x 5" notecard, the NOTETAKER actually works as a writer's database, allowing you to search notes by subject, key words, or special priority markings. So even if you have hundreds of notes, it's very easy and very fast to find just the ones you want. Notes can also be edited, merged with other text, or simply printed out.
Highlights
- Easy to use drop-down menus
- Desktop tools include built-in SPELLER, THESAURUS, WORD SEARCH, FORMAT
TOOL, and on-screen HELP
- Formatting tools add polish in the final writing stages
- The VIEWER lets the user see and work with any two documents simultaneously
- ADD-IN-MANAGER allows new applications to be combined with the existing program
- Program includes the BRAINSTORMER as an add-in feature for overcoming writer's block
- REFERENCE TOOL allows recording of source information and annotations
- Automatic generation of bibliography, table of contents, and footnotes
- Shortcuts (macros) allow the addition of up to 40 customized features to the program;
multistep procedures can be reduced to a single keystroke
- ASCII import and export
The WRITER in Wordbench could stand alone as a full-fledged word processor, but we've added other features to help give users all the tools they need to manage the writing process. Chief among them is the REFERENCE TOOL, which records source information, allows annotation of each source, contains an online style guide to citation formats and can be used to automatically generate a bibliography. In addition, notes can also be linked to their sources.
The overall flexibility of Wordbench is particularly noted in the FOLDER MANAGER which performs all the file maintenance chores, provides access to the Shortcuts (macros) and, importantly, can effect program and document setting changes to all of the documents in a folder.
Here's what people are saying about Wordbench.
"When using this product, I came closer to doing away with my legal pad and pen than I had with any other word processing program."
—A college instructor
"This is a good, powerful word processor, with an enormous variety of features...It has features I have never seen or used on a word processor [notecard function]."
—An English language instructor
"Wordbench is easier to use becuase of the menus and also envcourages the user to explore the more complicated, but more rewarding, features...In addition to being an excellent word processing package, it is an excellent system for keeping narrative records."
—A university dean
"[What aspects most helpful?] The concept—being able to easily set up your outline, add notes and flesh it out all in one package. Everything seemed very logical."
—A technology trainer
"The most helpful aspect of Wordbench was the user interface. I found that the program was easy to learn how to use, and easy to use...The environment surrounding the 'WRITER' is far more useful as a writing tool than any other word processor I have used."
—A college student
